About Erika Heard, MD
Originally from Texas and raised in Alabama, I have always been inspired by the rich traditions of community, resilience, and compassion that shaped my early years. My journey toward medicine began with a move to Atlanta, where I attended Spelman College, a prestigious historically Black college renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and leadership. At Spelman, I majored in Biology, immersing myself in the study of the natural sciences and fostering a passion for understanding the complexities of the human body and mind.
My pursuit of a medical career led me to Duke University School of Medicine, where I earned my medical degree and developed a deep commitment to patient-centered care. During my time at Duke, I engaged in rigorous clinical training and research, which fueled my desire to address not only physical health but also the mental and emotional well-being of my patients.
To further enhance my ability to provide comprehensive care, I completed a dual residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Emory University. This unique training equipped me to treat individuals holistically, addressing the interplay between physical and mental health. Recognizing a growing need for expertise in aging populations, I pursued a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at Emory, where I specialized in the nuanced care of older adults and gained valuable experience in managing the complexities of aging, including dementia-related neuropsychiatric symptoms.
My approach to care is both holistic and humanistic, emphasizing the interconnectedness of biological, psychological, and social factors in health and well-being. I offer a range of services, including psychotherapy and medication management, tailoring treatments to meet the individual needs of each patient. While I work with adults aged 18 and older, I have a particular focus on the geriatric population, addressing the unique challenges they face during the later stages of life.
With expertise in managing conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and dementia-related neuropsychiatric symptoms, I aim to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to help my patients achieve greater resilience, peace, and quality of life. My practice is rooted in a belief that every individual deserves to be seen, heard, and supported as they navigate the complexities of mental and emotional health.
